The acidotic response stated above is considered to be caused by this FFA increase. Intravenous injection of a 12 % amino acid solution produced a marked shift towards metabolic acidosis. The mean value of the pH decreased by 0.03, the mean value of the base excess by 2.8 mEq/l, and the mean value of Pco2 by 2.0mmHg.
